ADL Provides Hate Crimes Training to New Haven Area Police

Date: October 6, 2009

In a world where traumatic hate crimes with profound impact on victims and their communities are all too common, ADL Assistant Regional Director Randi Pincus trained police officers from throughout the South Central Connecticut region on hate and bias crimes.

As part of the officers' week-long recertification training, the program provided hate crimes statistics from Connecticut and nationally, and considered what constitutes a hate crime, related state and federal laws, and how to identify and investigate hate crimes.

The training specifically addressed the distinction between a hate crime and non-criminal bias incident, the importance and challenges of demonstrating bias-related motive, and the impact hate crimes have not only on the individual victim, but on the community as a whole.

ADL will provide the training to multiple groups of officers undertaking the recertification process throughout the fall.
