ADL Stands For Freedom in Iran
Date: October 21, 2009
As Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a Holocaust denier who has threatened to wipe Israel off the map and whose regime has brutally repressed protestors challenging his recent re-election, addressed the United Nations General Assembly, ADL joined thousands of Americans outside the UN to rally for human rights and an end to Iran's nuclear program at the "Stand for Freedom in Iran Rally." We are at a critical moment in history. Iran is on the brink of achieving nuclear capability while menacing the safety and security of Israel, the Middle East, and beyond. We do not want our children to ask where we were when such a threat was before us. ADL leaders from Connecticut answered the call and traveled to New York to participate in this historic opportunity to make our voices heard.
Speakers at the rally included New York Governor David Paterson, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. The rally was organized by a coalition of Jewish groups and other organizations, including the Progressive Iranian-American Council, labor unions, and African-American and Hispanic groups.
As ADL Regional Board member and Chair of ADL's Connecticut International Affairs Committee Joel Kaye noted, "The organizations participating in this rally represent a convergence of a wide range of American political, philosophical and religious thought, united in support of those brave Iranians who continue to risk everything to free their nation from its current reckless and despotic government. The Anti-Defamation League is proud to be among them."
