Reflections on Terrorism Threat 8 Years after 9/11
Date: October 13, 2009
On the anniversary of 9/11, Regional Director Barry Morrison reflected on the threats America faces, in an op-ed published in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Morrison noted that although "the picture is far from rosy" and that the "challenges posed by extremism and hatred" are abundant, but not reason for despair.
Morrison praised security efforts on the part of law enforcement, campus, clergy and elected officials, and called upon leaders to "stand up to expressions of hate, intolerance, and appeals to division and ignorance". Perhaps most importantly, Morrison challenged each of us to "look beyond ourselves, as well as within, to understand and be compassionate towards others, and to allay their fears of victimization and isolation".
