Holocaust Curriculum Workshop at Wilkes University
Date: October 8, 2008
In October, ADL held an Echoes and Reflections Holocaust curriculum training workshop at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA. This program, co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center of Wyoming Valley, introduced the Echoes and Reflections Multi-Media Curriculum on the Holocaust, designed to help teachers provide Holocaust education while also addressing contemporary issues of prejudice, bigotry, and modern-day genocide, to a group of pre-service educators from Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. The curriculum is the result of a partnership between ADL, Yad Vashem and the USC Shoah Foundation Institute.
The workshop explored the value of using visual history testimonies from survivors and witnesses, a signature component of the Echoes and Reflections curriculum. Participants also delved into one of the lessons in the curriculum on spiritual and cultural resistance during the Holocaust.
At the conclusion of the workshop, one student commented, "I thought your presentation was great. It helped us as future educators have a basis for where to start when teaching the Holocaust. Thanks again!"
