ADL Condemns Anti-Semitic Incident Targeting Frat House at University of Florida
Date: April 6, 2009
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) strongly condemns the anti-Semitic incident that occurred last week when a swastika was discovered painted on the Alpha Epsilon Pi house – a fraternity at the University of Florida with a strong Jewish presence.
Andrew Rosenkranz, ADL Florida Regional Director, issued the following statement:
|
It's disheartening to see that a fraternity was tarnished with anti-Semitic hate and the negative impact it will have not only upon its Jewish members, but the entire University of Florida campus. The use of the Nazi symbol, the swastika, evokes chilling memories of the Holocaust and of what can happen when hate and anti-Semitism are unchecked. The swastika remains one of the most powerful and enduring emblems of religious and ethnic hatred.
College campuses should be places for free discussion, open forums and wide acceptance, but unfortunately, college campuses are not immune from anti-Semitism. In 2007, ADL's Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents in Florida reported that 10 percent of all incidents occurred on college campuses throughout Florida. These incidents, directed at both students and teachers, manifested themselves through hateful graffiti, name-calling, slurs, mockery, bullying and threats. |
ADL has been monitoring anti-Semitism and anti-Israel/Zionist rhetoric on college campuses for decades. As outlined in ADL's online resource for Campus and Higher Education Affairs, campuses continue to face challenges when confronted by anti-Semitism, bigotry and racism. ADL has designed programs and tools to empower Jewish students to respond to anti-Jewish incidents with knowledge both before they begin college as well as during their college experience.
