ADL Condemns Swastika Discovered on University of Miami Campus
Date: October 29, 2009
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemns the swastika that was discovered in the men's restroom near the Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies at the University of Miami on Tuesday.
In a letter to University of Miami President Donna Shalala issued today, ADL wrote:

"On behalf of the Anti-Defamation League, we thank you for taking swift action in response to the discovery of a swastika in the men's restroom near the Miller Center for Contemporary Judaic Studies in the Merrick Building.
Too often, leaders of institutions do not communicate the type of strong message of condemnation you conveyed to the University of Miami community. It is vital that these forms of unfortunate incidents that stain college campuses are turned into teachable moments whereby students and university staff can learn to create a bias-free environment that does not tolerate hate symbols or any forms of hatred." |
The use of the Nazi symbol, the swastika, continues to serve as one of the most enduring and powerful depictions of religious and ethnic hatred as it reminds us of the Holocaust and what can happen when hate and anti-Semitism are unchecked. College campuses should be places for open dialogue and wide acceptance, but unfortunately, campuses are not immune from anti-Semitism. In April of this year, a swastika was discovered painted on the Alpha Epsilon Pi house – Jewish a fraternity at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
"While some might think that the posting of a swastika in restroom is trivial, symbols of hate and anti-Semitism must be repudiated in all forms," stated Andrew Rosenkranz, ADL Florida Regional Director.
