The Big Read
Date: January 1, 2009
Location: St. Louis, Missouri

ADL is privileged to be joining Washington University in St. Louis for the second year of its program, The Big Read. The Big Read is a nation-wide program designed to encourage literary reading by helping communities come together to read and discuss a single book.

ADL, along with Fox 2, HEC-TV, the Metro Theater, the Missouri History Museum, the Regional Art Commission, the St. Louis Public Library and the City of St. Louis will assist Washington University in planning lectures, readings, art exhibitions, theater productions, book discussion groups and film festivals that will be held in a variety of locations throughout St. Louis, all featuring the themes of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird.

ADL is very excited at this year’s choice of book. The civil rights issues addressed in the narrative are just what the ADL works to combat every day. The novel tells the story of the Finch family, who stood up against racial inequality in a time when it was not easy to do so. Atticus Finch has served as a beacon of morality and an inspiration for many readers; he stands for integrity, justice, and compassion.

ADL, as part of its No Place For Hate® program, plans to work with The Big Read to reinforce these ideals in schools and the rest of the community in order to combat hate, anti-Semitism, racism and intolerance.

For more information, contact 314-432-6868 or visit the Big Read website.

The Big Read will take place January 2009 - February 2009, but you can read the book any time!
