ADL Expresses Serious Concern over Noose, Razor Blade Allegations

The Mountain States Region of the Anti-Defamation League today expressed its very serious concern over allegations reported in the media that two Arapahoe County employees were subjected to racial harassment, including incidents when nooses were found in their work areas, unwrapped razor blades were placed in a tool belt, and racial slurs, comments and jokes were made by fellow employees.

"It is especially shocking and upsetting to hear reports of nooses in Colorado," said Bruce H. DeBoskey, ADL Regional Director. "Nooses symbolize a shameful, hateful, criminal era in American history, and should never be tolerated or treated casually. We applaud the actions of the Arapahoe County Commissioners and the Arapahoe County Sheriff in taking action to investigate these incidents, and to prosecute any criminal activity they discover as hate crimes under Colorado law."

UPDATE

Date: Dec. 20, 2007

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a suspect in this case. The charge against the suspect will be raised from a Class 3 misdemeanor to a Class 1 misdemeanor under Colorado’s Bias Motivated Crime Statute. ADL will continue to monitor the case as it progresses.
