ADL Urges NO Vote on Denver Initiative 300

Date: September 25, 2009

ADL has joined a broad coalition of groups and individuals to OPPOSE Denver Initiative 300, the “vehicle impoundment” initiative, which will be on the ballot mailed to Denver voters in October.  A majority of Denver City Council members oppose this initiative, as do the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police and the County Sheriffs of Colorado.

Many Denver voters are unaware of Initiative 300, which would force Denver police officers to impound the vehicle of anyone driving without a license and registration.  Getting a vehicle out of the impound lot could cost $2700, even after a driver proves later that he or she has a valid drivers’ license.

By taking discretion away from police officers, who already have the ability to impound a vehicle if it is in the interest of public safety, the ordinance will force law enforcement officers to spend time processing the impoundment of vehicles instead of responding to important and priority calls to keep our communities safe.

For more information on the ordinance and the reasons our coalition opposes it, go to www.votenoonimpound.com.
