Annual Meeting Keynote Speaker, Judy Shepard, Reflects on Personal Experience and Advocacy for Anti-Hate Crime Legislation

On Tuesday, June 12th the New York Region held its 2012 Annual Meeting at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City. New York Region’s leaders, supporters and community partners joined for an evening recognizing the accomplishments of the New York Region and its work to raise support and awareness for ADL.
The keynote speaker was Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard and President of the Matthew Shepard Foundation Governing Board. Ms. Shepard shared her personal reflections on the state of hate crimes and prejudice since the tragic death of her son in October 1998 which became one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes in American history. Ms. Shepard spoke about her admiration for the work of ADL and its critical role in advocating on behalf of anti-hate crime legislation. The New York Region inducted three new members to its New York Regional Board: Lisa Bebchik, Heidi Mandel and Joel Sonkin. The evening continued with recognition of the leadership of ADL supporters that have made an impact in the Region. The award winners were:
