ADL Provides Program on Anti-Immigrant Extremism to Community Leaders

Date: October 15, 2009

Community leaders along with ADL Latino Jewish Roundtable co-chair Suzanne Prince (left) gathered at the offices of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), headed by Angelica Salas (center), in Los Angeles for an ADL presentation on Anti-Immigrant Extremism  led by Assistant Regional Director Elana Wien (right) on  September 30.

During the seminar Wien outlined the key trends, groups and individuals involved in the more extreme elements of the anti-immigrant movement. Participants were provided with resources in both English and Spanish to enable them to more readily identify these regional and national groups. Following the presentation, participants engaged in an interactive discussion on how diverse community leaders can best combat anti-Latino and anti-immigrant extremism locally and nationally.

ADL has become increasingly concerned about the virulent anti-immigrant and anti-Latino rhetoric employed by extremist groups and coalitions posing as legitimate, mainstream advocates against illegal immigration in America. Purveyors of this extremist rhetoric use stereotypes and outright bigotry to target immigrants and hold them responsible for numerous societal ills.
