Calls for ADL’s Human Relations Expertise Increase in Times of Conflict
Date: September 3, 2009
After receiving several reports about anti-Semitic graffiti, a locally-developed hate website, verbal harassment, even a death threat within the past few months, the ADL Plains States Region has been busy providing human relations expertise and security recommendations to the individuals, families and schools involved.
The rash of Omaha-based incidents signal "an alarming level of bigotry and ignorance in our own backyard that we need to deal with," ADL Regional Director Alan Potash said.
How exactly are bias incidents addressed?
"Each case is unique, but typically, we get the call first from the family, business or individual targeted," Potash explained. "We then contact police, legal services and school administrators as needed. We offer intervention and prevention strategies depending on the circumstances. For example, if there is a pattern of racial conflict at one school, we might follow up with an anti-bias educational workshop or our No Place for Hate program. We also provide opportunities for community-wide dialogue."
Much of this work takes place behind the scenes, Potash noted.
"We're in the business of improving human relations, promoting respect across differences and ensuring fair treatment," he said.
