Chula Vista Hills Elementary is No Place for Hate®
Date: January 17, 2012
ADL congratulates Chula Vista Hills Elementary School for completing two of their three No Place for Hate® activities for the 2011-2012 school year.
All teachers received training and materials to implement a school-wide compliment activity entitled “Fill a Bucket!” Compliment Program in August 2011. This program is based on the publications Have You Filled a Bucket Today? Sue Black, a facilitator and teacher at Chula Vista Hills, trained the teachers, who then set up bucket stations and taught students how to encourage and support each other emotionally.
Class discussions about self-esteem and how our actions can positively or negatively impact others were held. Time was set aside each week for complimenting and encouraging each other by filling their buckets.
To further reinforce Chula Vista Hills’ theme of appreciating and encouraging all students with peer to peer support, the school conducted a N.E.D. Peaceful Assembly in December. The N.E.D. presenter delivered the message of Never give up, Encourage Others, Do your Best while doing magic and yoyo tricks. Students and teachers discussed and wrote about the N.E.D. message and the importance of being a role model.
We look forward to hearing about Chula Vista Hills Elementary’s final No Place for Hate® activity: a Peace Concert to be held near the end of the school year. Each grade level will be singing new songs about peace and tolerance.
Chula Vista Hills Elementary School, part of the Chula Vista Elementary School District, is participating in ADL’s No Place for Hate® initiative for the third straight year.
