Community of Respect™
This innovative community-wide anti-bias initiative is based on the Anti-Defamation League's (ADL's) successful No Place for Hate® Campaign. Over 40 schools in the Santa Barbara/Tri-Counties Region have been designated annually as building a No Place for Hate® school community after completing a series of ADL-approved anti-bias activities.
To learn more about the program and how to complete the simple steps necessary, please contact us. Organizations completing the Community of Respect™ requirements within the allotted timeframe will be recognized publicly at our yearly reception.
WHAT IS THE COMMUNITY OF RESPECT™ INITIATIVE? A Community of Respect™ is a place where individuals appreciate each other’s differences and work together to create an atmosphere of respect and understanding. This innovative community-wide anti-bias initiative was launched in 2008 in the Santa Barbara/Tri-Counties Region and was inspired by the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) successful No Place for Hate® Initiative.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE COMMUNITY OF RESPECT™ INITIATIVE? To provide free and easy-to-use resources that help businesses, organizations and houses of worship demonstrate their appreciation of diversity. To recognize these entities for their efforts. To create a more inclusive environment for all to work, play and worship.
WHY DO WE NEED A COMMUNITY OF RESPECT™ INITIATIVE? Our world is changing. Our cities are becoming more diverse. The internet allows for more global communication. On a daily basis, we meet and interact with a broad range of people who are different from ourselves. This initiative highlights the benefits of diversity, encourages inclusiveness, and empowers people to reject prejudice and discrimination.
STEPS TO BECOMING DESIGNATED AS A COMMUNITY OF RESPECT™: 1. Create a diversity coalition and/or appoint a person to oversee the implementation of the Community of Respect™ Initiative. 2. Sign the “Resolution of Respect” in our Resource Guide or create one of your own. 3. Choose and complete, within the year, three or more activities that celebrate diversity and promote respect. 4. Document all steps and activities by submitting the necessary forms to ADL, available on our Community of Respect™ page. The first step in this process is to complete the Community Project Approval Forms and send them to ADL.
Once these are approved, you can officially begin the Community of Respect™ year-long designation process. After each activity has been completed, submit the Community Project Fulfillment Form. Upon completion of all of these requirements your organization will be designated a Community of Respect™.
