Austin Highlight of the Month for December: YMCA of Travis County
The YMCA of Travis County is working toward having all 18 after-school sites earn a No Place for Hate® designation this year. Two years ago five after-school sites earned the designation, and last year, six sites earned the designation.
With the support of the YMCA board and staff, YMCA members and after-school students are seeing to it that all 18 after-school sites achieve the Y's goal.
At one site students made a chain out of construction paper with each color symbolizing core values: red for caring, blue for honesty, purple for faith, yellow for respect, green for responsibility. Students also drew a picture of what each value meant to them.
Another after-school site helped children visualize the idea of No Place for Hate® by having students create mosaics with construction paper symbolizing their idea of the opposite of hate.
