ADL's New Resource Guide Helps Schools, Communities Build Respect

Date: November 18, 2008

ADL's Southwest Region premiered its new 2008-2009 Resource Guide: Building Respect at its 2008 Torch of Liberty Dinner November 20, and in nearly 200,000 editions of the Houston Chronicle November 21.  The guide includes step-by-step instructions for schools that want to be designated No Place for Hate®, and others who want to become a Community of Respect™, more than a hundred suggested activities that can help achieve such a designation, and a calendar and glossary of religious and cultural observances for 2009 and 2010.

Schools have been using the Resource Guide, which is updated annually, since 2001 to achieve No Place for Hate® designations.  Participants in the schools sign a Resolution of  Respect, which can be found in English and Spanish in this year's guide, complete three activities from the guide or approved by ADL designed to reject bias and welcome diversity, and document those activities to achieve a No Place for Hate® designation.

Families, faith institutions, businesses, non-profit agencies, and communities use the guide in a similar way to be designated a Community of Respect™.  The guide is used in Houston, Austin, and throughout ADL's Southwest Region.  To obtain a copy of the guide, you may download a pdf from this web site, or call ADL in Houston at 713-627-3490, or in Austin at 512-735-8012.
