Miller Trainings Increase in Southwest Region
Date: September 20, 2011
ADL's Southwest Region is increasing its numbers of Miller Early Childhood Initiative of the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute trainings. Since the initiative was implemented in the Southwest Region, Assistant Project Director Pam Autio and her facilitators have presented at least 70 Miller workshops, for 587 adults.
That means approximately 5870 children have been touched by the Miller Early Childhood Initiative Workshops coordinated in ADL's Southwest Region. The workshops train early childhood educators, caregivers and family members to help children understand, respect, and appreciate differences.
Studies have shown almost 50 percent of children have racial biases by the age of six. The Miller Early Childhood Initiative aims to counteract those biases. A child impact evaluation study of the Miller initiative by the Barry University School of Social work found that children whose teachers participated in the Miller Early Childhood Initiative experienced higher levels of self-concept and self-respect and less biased attitudes and behavior than children in the control group.
