Southwest Region Launches Ninth Year of No Place for Hate®

Date: September 22, 2009

More than 200 schools participated in ADL's No Place for Hate® campaign last school year, and it is hoped even more will take part in the campaign during the 2009-2010 school year.

This year marks the ninth year of the No Place for Hate® initiative in ADL's Southwest Region, and it continues to be embraced by public and private schools in the Houston and Austin areas, even as it spreads to other communities throughout the state.

"When we started No Place for Hate®," said ADL Regional Director Martin B. Cominsky, "we hoped it would catch on quickly, and it has.  We went from about 10 participating schools in the 2001-2002 school year to dozens, then hundreds.   We'd love to continue to grow the program in numbers and significance."

Schools participating in the campaign create a No Place for Hate® Coalition to coordinate the campaign at the school, sign a Resolution of Respect, complete at least three anti-bias activities, and submit certain forms documenting the steps outlined above for approval.  Once approved, the school receives a No Place for Hate® banner that can be presented at a special assembly and can be hung on a wall, or from the rafters like a championship banner.

"All our No Place for Hate® schools are champions, as far as we’re concerned,"  Cominsky adds.  "While receiving the designation doesn’t make them perfect, it indicates students, faculty and staff recognize the importance of diversity and respect, and are dedicated to working toward those ideals every day.  Nothing would make us happier than adding even more campuses to our already growing list!"
