Tips on Being an Ally

Date: October 12, 2010

Here are some simple steps you can take to respond to bullying:

  • When you witness an incident, acknowledge to yourself
what happened and, if appropriate, let the target know
that you saw what happened and are there to support
    him or her.
  • Ask what you can do to help. Remember, being an ally
means supporting another person. To do so, you need to
learn what that other person needs or wants in the way of
    support. Don’t assume you know!
  • Assist in solving the problem. Be aware of and suggest
possible resources, such as peer counseling or seeking
    adult assistance.
  • Take appropriate steps. Inform adults if threats, injury or
    property damage has occurred.
